The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne has been a centre of learning for more than 154 years, its main campus on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD in Parkville is a focus of the City’s ‘Knowledge Precinct’ and the prestigious medical research ‘Parkville Strip’.

Melbourne is a leading research university, widely renowned for its teaching and the social and economic contributions it makes through knowledge transfer. The University’s performance in international rankings puts it at the forefront of higher education in the AsiaPacific and beyond. Internationally, the University’s standing was affirmed when it was ranked at No. 27 in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement. Melbourne’s international research preeminence was also acknowledged with a top 100 ranking in the Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings. Ranked No. 79 in 2007, the University has climbed steadily in the rankings since first appearing at No. 92 in 2003.

The University of Melbourne has launched the Melbourne Model, a groundbreaking educational reform, which represents a major advance in the provision of an internationally recognized and globally competitive university education.

The Melbourne Model introduces undergraduate programs characterized by both breadth and depth, followed by a graduate professional degree, a research higher degree or entry directly into employment. In 2008 Melbourne offered six New Generation undergraduate degrees in Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Music and Science. The Melbourne Model also introduces a new graduate school experience to Australia, providing the best and brightest with a more focused, intense and professionally relevant degree in areas such as Law, Architecture, Teaching and Nursing.

More than 44,000 students, including approximately 9,800 students from over 100 countries, take courses in the University’s 12 faculties and graduate schools, including the Victoria College of the Arts, as well as the Melbourne Business School and the School of Graduate Research. All students are encouraged to undertake part of their studies overseas, earning credit towards their Melbourne degrees.

The University continues to attract outstanding students. In 2007, the University introduced the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars program, an enhancement program for high performing Year 11 and 12 students.

The University is consolidating its high international standing in research, teaching and knowledge transfer through:

  • The $100 million Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute, which brings together over 400 scientists from the University, biomedical research institutes and industry.
  • Its many scholars of international renown, including three winners of the Nobel Prize, including Professor Peter Doherty for Physiology or Medicine, and visiting Eminent Scholars.
  • Membership of Universitas 21, an international network of leading researchintensive universities, Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and through international partnerships with some 80 bilateral agreements with universities around the world.
